Focus Moment – December 12th

Silence and Centering

“Be still, and know that I am God!- Psalm 46:10

God of grace and truth, in Jesus Christ, You came among us to call us to Yourself. You came as our Shepherd that we might hear Your voice and follow wherever You lead. Yet all too often we have been blind to Your presence, deaf to Your voice, and rebellious to Your will. Forgive us and our sheep-like ways. Take away our timid faith and excuses. In Your mercy, strengthen us with a renewed hope that we might follow and love You with our whole hearts. In Christ’s Name we pray. Amen.

This small copper coin Jesus describes was the smallest coin of least value in the Romans Empire. He is teaching about God providentially care for His children. That God controls the timing and circumstances of such seemingly insignificant events as the death of a tiny bird like a sparrow. Nothing escapes God’s detection and will. God does not miss the smallest detail of what is happening on planet earth. Even the ‘hairs of your head are all numbered.’ Such apparently insignificant trivia about you as the fate of hair number 1, 233 is known and noted by God.

Our God is not so busy running the universe that He hasn’t got the time for little birds and little us, With six and a half billion people why would He care? With an estimated twice as many sparrows, why would he be concerned at all? Yes, it seems trivial to us but not to the One who has given life to this spinning blue marble called earth. Jesus doesn’t want us to miss the fact that we are greatly loved. The point is that you are valuable to God regardless of what anyone else may think or say. God knows hair count for every person on the planet daily.

Jesus takes great care to highlight this attribute of our heavenly Father. This is especially encouraging at those times when we think there is no one who notices or can help us. What a thought! That God is not so busy running the universe that He hasn’t got the time for little birds and us. As David said in Psalm 144:3, “LORD, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?” Or as the New Living Translation puts it, “O LORD, what are mortals that you should notice us, mere humans that you should care for us?” But He does!

Prayer: “Lord we thank you for Your loving care and protection this day. We gladly surrender to Your will this day and place ourselves under Your wing.”
