Silence and Centering

“Be still, and know that I am God!- Psalm 46:10

Confession:

Dear Heavenly Father, we are a world in need.  We need hope, forgiveness, love. We need Jesus. Your Word tells us that Jesus is the One whose birth brings real hope, whose life inspires real love, whose death and resurrection renders us forgiven.

We confess that we often spin our wheels trying to fix things on our own, Doubting your power to effect change in our homes, our hearts, and our world.  We ask for your forgiveness, and for strength to be a people who believe that you are the One with real power to save. In Jesus’ Name we pray Amen.

PAUSE FOR 2 MINUTES OF SILENCE

Read

Luke 1:31-37 (CEB)

31Look! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great and he will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of David his father.

33He will rule over Jacob’s house forever, and there will be no end to his kingdom.”

34Then Mary said to the angel, “How will this happen since I haven’t had sexual relations with a man?”

35The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come over you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the one who is to be born will be holy. He will be called God’s Son. 36Look, even in her old age, your relative Elizabeth has conceived a son. This woman who was labeled ‘unable to conceive’ is now six months pregnant. 37Nothing is impossible for God.”

Reflect

Think about Mary’s situation for a moment. She’s young—probably about 13. She has been promised in marriage to Joseph. Now, she learns she is about to become pregnant. This is not good news because her future husband is not the father. In those days, being caught having an affair could be punishable by death. Of course, Mary didn’t have an affair.

But who was going to believe the truth—that this was God’s baby!? What would people think? What would Joseph do? How was Mary going to do this?

Mary put her total faith in God. The angel told her that she had found favor with God and that nothing was impossible with God. Mary knew that the situation was going to be very uncomfortable, but she also knew that if she trusted God everything would be alright.

Respond

Sometimes God calls us into uncomfortable situations. It might be defending somebody who’s being picked on. It might be blowing off some friends because they’re getting into something you don’t want to be a part of. It could be standing up for the fact that you’re a Christian. God is honored when you act with integrity in these situations. Sure, it’s uncomfortable, but God is there to give you help. Trust in God, because with God nothing is impossible.
