Focus Moment – 1/22/18

Know that God is present with you and ready to converse.

Father, please comfort me. Jesus, please shepherd my soul. Holy Spirit, please water me with your wisdom.

Read Matthew 5:38-48:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Notice what you think and feel as you read the text.

  1. S. Lewis wrote in The Four Loves: “To love at all is to be vulnerable. . . . If you want to make sure of keeping [your heart] intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket of your selfishness. But in that casket—safe, dark, motionless, airless—it will change. It will not be broken—it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. . . . The only place outside of Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from the danger of love is Hell.” Lord, I must confess that there are moments when my true feelings are veiled with a smile or hidden behind a sarcastic remark. Oftentimes, I see myself hating those who hurt me. I don’t like to be wronged or ignored. Jesus, please make me to embrace those moments. Lord, I invite you into all of my wounds, so that I can have room in my heart to love others.

Reflect.

Am I joyful? How is my thought-life? What am I not surrendering?

Confess and Repent:

“Holy Spirit, please search my heart and guide me, please…” (Continue in your own words.)

Pray as you are led for yourself and others.

“Lord, please prune my tainted motives. Please meet me in my suffering, Jesus. Holy Spirit, please…” (Continue in your own words.)

Listen to the Holy Spirit.

“Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” What else is the Holy Spirit saying to you?

Ask God to show you how to live today.

Father, please remove the idols of my heart. Jesus, please make me to focus on the Reality of You, Alone as the Source of my Joy. Holy Spirit, please empower me to love those that seem impossible to love. In Jesus’ Powerful Name, amen.
