Silence and Centering

“Be still, and know that I am God; – Psalm 46:10

Lord, in You we find hope. Yet, so often we are tempted to do our own thing apart from You. We have tried and failed to manage our lives. We have tried without success to guard what we say and don’t say. We have tried to serve selflessly. We have tried to contain our appetites and desires. We have tried not to judge or condemn. We have tried to control our thoughts. The harder we try, the more obvious it becomes that we cannot attain Your level of perfection. Therefore, we confess our brokenness and weakness to You. We humbly thank You for forgiving our sins and washing us clean through the grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Reading & Devotional:

Exodus 13:17-18

When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt. So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.

The Longer Way

It’s interesting that God led the Israelites through the long way. There was a well-established highway between Egypt and Israel but God knew the Israelites would lose heart and turn back because of resistance. Often God will lead us along the longer path because he knows it’s better for us. Easier isn’t always better. Often the shortest route has the most competition. Trust God and where he is leading you.

Walk in the Spirit

Part of our Daily Walk is following the Spirit’s leading. God will often test our trust by taking us on a path that makes no sense. He wants to see if we will follow him or turn and go back. Paul tells us in Romans to walk by the Spirit. This means doing what God leads us to do. Abraham followed God’s leading several times in his life. David was known as a man after God’s own heart. We may not know what is going to happen when we take the first step but we can be confident that He will be with us through it all. Israel took the long way and ended up in the promise land.

Almighty God, all thoughts of truth and peace come from you. Kindle in the hears of all your children the love of peace, and guide with your wisdom the leaders of nations, so that your kingdom will go forward in peace and the earth will be filled with the knowledge of your love; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Our Father (slowly pray this)
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever, Amen.
